BIAB Removal or Refill? When Is Full Removal Needed?

BIAB manicure and removal guide in Leiden

When your BIAB has grown out, you usually have two options: refill the existing structure or remove the product completely. Full removal is not automatically necessary at every appointment. The right choice depends on the condition of the product, the natural nail underneath and what you want to do next.

What is a BIAB refill?

During a refill, stable product is kept on the nail. The regrowth area is prepared, any lifted or unstable material is removed, and the structure is rebuilt and rebalanced. This avoids unnecessarily removing product that is still secure.

Our BIAB refill guide explains maintenance timing in more detail.

When is a refill usually enough?

  • the existing BIAB is still firmly attached;
  • there are no significant cracks or large lifted areas;
  • the natural nail is comfortable;
  • you want to continue with the same compatible system;
  • the main issue is normal regrowth.

In those cases, a refill can be the more efficient option because the technician only removes what needs to be removed and then restores the balance.

When should BIAB be removed completely?

There is extensive lifting

If a large part of the product has separated from the natural nail, leaving it in place is not useful. The unstable material should be removed so the nail can be inspected before a new application.

The product is cracked or structurally compromised

A deep crack, impact damage or multiple repairs may make a fresh application more sensible than repeatedly patching an unstable base.

You are changing product systems

If you are switching to a different system, a technician may choose full removal so the new product is applied over a controlled, compatible base.

The natural nail needs to be assessed

Full removal can be useful if the natural nail has become unusually thin, sore or damaged, because the technician needs to see the actual condition instead of covering it immediately.

You want to stop wearing BIAB

If you are taking a break from builder gel or returning to bare natural nails, the remaining product can be professionally removed rather than allowed to peel off.

Does BIAB need to be removed every three or four weeks?

No. A maintenance interval and a full-removal interval are not the same thing. Many clients return every three to four weeks for maintenance without fully removing all stable BIAB each time.

Can you remove BIAB at home?

Peeling, picking or forcing product off is one of the easiest ways to thin the natural nail. If the system is soak-off, the correct removal method still requires controlled filing and product removal. Other builder systems may require professional filing rather than soaking.

If you are unsure which product is on your nails, do not aggressively file or soak at random. A technician can identify the safest removal approach.

Why does peeling BIAB damage nails?

When cured product is pulled away, it can take layers of the natural nail plate with it. The nail may then feel thin, rough or sensitive, and future coatings may have a weaker surface to adhere to.

What happens after full BIAB removal?

The natural nails are inspected and shaped. Depending on their condition and your plan, you might leave them natural, choose a simple manicure, apply another suitable system or start a fresh BIAB set.

If there is pain, redness, swelling, unusual discolouration or suspected infection, cosmetic product should not simply be applied over it. Medical assessment may be more appropriate.

How do you know what to book?

If your BIAB is mostly intact with normal regrowth, a refill or maintenance service is usually the closest match. If you have major lifting, damage or want everything removed, choose a removal option where available or mention the condition clearly in your booking notes.

FAQ

Is full removal healthier than refilling?

Not automatically. Repeated unnecessary removal can also expose the natural nail to extra filing. The safest approach is based on product condition and correct technique.

Can lifted BIAB simply be filled over?

No. Unstable lifted material should be removed before fresh product is applied.

Can I switch from BIAB to gel polish?

Yes, if the natural nail is suitable. The technician may remove or reduce the builder product first, depending on the products and desired result.
