BIAB is designed to give natural nails more structure than a basic colour coating, but it still grows out with your natural nail. For many clients, a practical maintenance rhythm is around three to four weeks. The exact timing depends on nail growth, lifestyle, length, product condition and how much stress your hands take every day.
How long does BIAB usually last?
Many BIAB clients return after roughly three to four weeks. Some people grow out faster and need maintenance sooner. Others may still have good product retention after four weeks, but the structure has moved forward as the natural nail grows.
That matters because maintenance is not only about appearance. A builder-gel overlay is shaped to support the nail in a particular position. As the nail grows, that balance changes.
What affects how long BIAB lasts?
Your natural nail growth
Fast-growing nails show a visible regrowth area sooner. If your nails grow quickly, a shorter maintenance cycle can keep the manicure looking cleaner and more balanced.
Your daily routine
Frequent cleaning, long exposure to water, manual work, sport and repeated impact can increase wear. Nails are tools only in the biological sense — using them to open cans, scrape labels or pry objects puts unnecessary stress on the coating.
Nail length
Longer nails create more leverage. A short BIAB manicure may feel easier to maintain for an active lifestyle, while longer nails often need closer attention to structure and maintenance timing.
Aftercare
Regular cuticle oil, hand cream and basic protection during wet or chemical-heavy work can help keep the surrounding skin and manicure in better condition.
When should you book a BIAB refill?
If the product is intact and the natural nail is healthy, many clients book a refill around three to four weeks. During a refill, the regrowth is prepared and the structure is rebalanced rather than simply adding product at the base.
Read our BIAB refill and maintenance guide for more detail.
Signs you should return sooner
- lifting at the cuticle or sidewalls;
- a crack or split in the product;
- a nail that has become uncomfortable;
- significant length that no longer feels practical;
- damage after an impact;
- visible separation where water or debris could collect.
Do not peel or pull lifted product off. That can remove layers from the natural nail.
Can BIAB last longer than four weeks?
Sometimes the coating may still look attached after four weeks, but that does not automatically mean it is ideal to keep wearing it indefinitely. The apex and support structure move forward as the nail grows, so a maintenance appointment can still be appropriate even when the colour looks fine.
How to make BIAB wear well between appointments
- Use cuticle oil regularly.
- Wear gloves for cleaning and prolonged wet work.
- Avoid picking or peeling edges.
- File only minor free-edge roughness if your technician has advised it.
- Do not use your nails to pry or scrape hard objects.
- Book maintenance before lifting becomes extensive.
BIAB or gel polish?
If your main goal is colour and your natural nails are already strong, gel polish may be enough. If you want more structure, BIAB or another builder-gel system may be more suitable. See our BIAB vs Gel Polish guide.
FAQ
Is three weeks too soon for a BIAB refill?
No. If your nails grow quickly, you use your hands heavily or you notice lifting, three weeks can be a sensible maintenance point.
Is four weeks always safe?
Not automatically. The condition of the product and natural nail matters more than a fixed calendar rule.
Should BIAB be fully removed every appointment?
Not necessarily. Depending on the product condition and service plan, a refill may be appropriate. Full removal may be chosen when changing systems, assessing the natural nail or dealing with compromised product.
